Canada’s Chartered Directors
The Directors College is pleased to present Canada’s Chartered Directors. The graduates listed below have completed The Chartered Director Program, an intensive individual examination, and have met the other requirements to become a Chartered Director (C.Dir.)
The Directors College and the Collège des administrateurs de sociétés (CAS) of Université Laval have a reciprocal agreement, whereby their respective designations – Chartered Director (C.Dir.) and Administrateur de sociétés certifié (ASC) are recognized as equivalent.

Ms. Ellen Pekeles, C.Dir.
Board Chair, Mountain Equipment Coop
Ellen Pekeles was an executive leader for 21 years, supporting Boards in two complex sectors - health care and banking. She has served on nine Boards - non profit, public sector, cooperative and foundations - over a 17 year period.
Ellen is the current Board Chair of Mountain Equipment Coop, elected by the Board as Chair, and elected by MEC members to serve a second three year term as a Director. She chaired the Human Resource Committee for two years and governed the creation and implementation of a CEO Long Term Incentive Plan, a Human Resource strategy with metrics and a CEO succession plan. She has served as a member of the Finance and Audit Committee, Governance and Nominations committees. As Board Chair she sits on all committees ex officio.
Ellen recently retired as Senior Vice President (SVP) of Operations for Vancity Credit Union in January 2017. The portfolio she held from April 2012 until retirement included Human Resources, Facilities and Environmental Management; she was also accountable for Information Technology until October 2015. Vancity has $24 billion in assets, over 500,000 members and 2500 staff. Under Ellen’s leadership Vancity became a certified Living Wage employer in 2011 and carbon neutral in 2008. She held three previous executive positions at Vancity since she joined in November 2006: VP Community Leadership, SVP Strategy and VP Human Resources.
Prior to Vancity, Ellen was a Chief Operating Officer in Vancouver Coastal Health from 2002-2006. In that role she was responsible for the full spectrum of health care in 11 municipalities and 14 First Nations communities leading 3500 staff.
Ellen holds a BSc in Physical Therapy from University of Toronto and an MHA from University of Ottawa.
